Recently, Pastor Wilson shared with me a conversation he had with a member who was struggling with deep sadness. They couldn’t quite explain why they felt so down or figure out what to do about it. Despite their efforts to find peace, the sadness remained. As they talked, Pastor Wilson felt led by God to guide them to three specific verses from Psalms—Psalm 42:5, 42:11, and 43:5.
In these passages, David repeatedly asks, “Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God.” David’s words reflect the same emotional and spiritual struggle that this member was experiencing. His soul was disquieted, but he didn’t just dwell on his sadness. David’s response was to place his hope in God, trusting that praise and peace would come again.
Pastor Wilson shared how this conversation reminded him that many of us go through seasons where our hearts feel heavy for reasons we can’t fully understand. Like David, we might find ourselves asking why we’re feeling down or disquieted, but the important lesson is what follows—David chooses to hope in God. That’s the key to finding peace even when we can’t figure out why we feel the way we do.
After their talk, Pastor Wilson encouraged the member to hold on to these verses, trusting that peace will come as they continue to place their hope in God. He also asked me to share this reflection with you, knowing that others may be facing similar struggles. (Read Post Here.)
If you’re feeling sad or overwhelmed, remember David’s example. Acknowledge the despair, but don’t stop there. Choose to hope in God. He is your source of strength, and in Him, you will find peace, even when the answers seem unclear. You are not alone, and God’s peace is always available for those who seek Him.
